Couples Therapy
Relationships can get off track.
What happens when the relationship is showing you your deepest wounds?
You may feel unheard, disconnected, or stuck in cycles that keep repeating, no matter how much you talk about them. Conflict can pull you out of your body into reactivity, shutdown, or escalation.
Often, there’s a painful tension: it can feel as though you must choose between staying connected to yourself and staying connected to your partner.
Many couples arrive with one person already in individual therapy, longing for the relationship to catch up to the growth already underway, while the other might not be as far along in their own self-growth.
Often, what’s triggering you most in the relationship or with the other person is where your wounds are most raw and tender. This is an invitation not only to grow closer to your partner but also to yourself while in connection with another.
What brings people here?
People often seek this work because they want a deeper connection without losing themselves.
They’re tired of having the same arguments, the same ruptures, the same disconnections, even when there’s love and good intention underneath.
There’s a desire to understand why things escalate and how to stay present when it feels hardest.
Many couples are looking for tools that go beyond communication skills – ways to stay regulated, embodied, and anchored in themselves during emotionally charged moments.
There are three main goals.
First, we will address the uncertainty about the process and the feeling of vulnerability of encountering each other in the therapeutic context.
Next, I will help you identify the feelings that provide a semblance of connection between you, as well as the walls that separate you. The key to this part is being open, listening to what each has to say, and respecting their opinions.
Finally, once each partner begins to see the patterns that are impacting the relationship, they can develop ways to respond differently to one another in the moment.
As a result of this work, you will learn to: stay in your body when triggered; maintain a sense of self in a relationship; notice and interrupt patterns of reactivity or shutdown; and relate from choice rather than from survival.
Let’s work to make the right connection.
Every couple experiences relationship difficulties at some point. This is why seeking help through couples therapy offers a time to work through those difficulties.
Couples therapy can help you pay attention to what’s happening internally – the nervous system responses, protective patterns, and moments where self-connection gets lost.
Regulation and self-connection are the foundation for meaningful relational connections. This is what we strive to do in couples therapy.
