Eating Disorder Recovery
Understanding is necessary for recovery.
Perhaps you have habits or compulsions that feel out of control. You may have a persistent body dissatisfaction or dysmorphia, or feel a disconnection from your body and inner needs.
Maybe you exercise self-criticism and feel pressure to “be further along,” as you strive to address the problem of eating too much, not eating enough, or purging.
Eating disorders represent a serious problem that can impact one’s life, relationships, behaviors, and overall health.
Even if you’re medically stable, the eating disorder can quietly shape your life. The work is about more than food or weight. It’s about reconnecting with the deepest parts of yourself.
Therapy can help you make that reconnection.
In therapy, we will move at a pace that feels safe. We will recognize attachments to control and body patterns. Our work will involve somatic and embodiment-based practices, and we will focus on understanding why control was needed and how to turn to other coping strategies over time.
We will begin by determining where you stand in the therapeutic process. For instance, you may be idealizing the therapeutic process, doubting it, projecting onto the therapist that this will be the answer, or feeling doubt and assuming it can’t work.
Then, I will help you see the reality of the process. You will soon realize that change won’t occur overnight and that you have to do the work, because it’s not enough to show up for sessions. Implementing change requires feeling uncomfortable in your life outside of therapy.
Eventually, you will start to see that they can be uncomfortable as well as offer benefits. At this stage, you will begin to become willing to try tools and practices in their life outside of sessions and in sessions.
Our goal is recovery, not symptom management.
Therapy for eating disorders can help you reconnect with your body while learning to observe judgment rather than be controlled by it. You will learn how to move through self-criticism and shame, seeing them as teachers to meet with curiosity.
In addition, you will begin to observe patterns of control to ease into making different choices over time, helping you learn how to navigate a culture that focuses on appearance.
Through therapy, you can overcome your eating disorder, and throughout the process, I will be by your side.
